Every week, our consultants at Brilliant Job Consultancy review hundreds of resumes for open positions across manufacturing, retail, IT, healthcare, and more. Some resumes get shortlisted within minutes; others, despite belonging to genuinely qualified candidates, get passed over because of avoidable formatting or content issues. Here are ten changes that consistently improve a candidate's chances.
1. Lead With a Clear Objective or Summary
The first three or four lines of your resume should tell an employer exactly what role you are looking for and what you bring to it. Avoid generic statements like "hardworking individual seeking opportunities." Instead, be specific: "Detail-oriented accounts executive with 3 years of experience in GST compliance and vendor reconciliation, seeking a senior accounts role."
2. Keep Formatting Simple and Consistent
Recruiters often review resumes quickly, especially when filtering large applicant pools. Stick to a single font, consistent heading sizes, and clear section breaks. Avoid elaborate templates with graphics or tables that can break when opened on different devices or converted to PDF.
3. Quantify Your Achievements
"Managed a sales team" tells an employer very little. "Managed a team of 6 sales executives, growing quarterly revenue by 22%" tells them a great deal. Wherever possible, attach numbers to your accomplishments — team size, budget managed, percentage improvements, or timeframes.
4. Tailor Your Resume to Each Application
Sending the exact same resume to every job posting is one of the most common mistakes we see. Take ten minutes before applying to adjust your primary skills and summary to reflect the specific requirements listed in the job description, using similar language where it genuinely applies to your experience.
5. List Your Most Relevant Experience First
Unless you are a fresher, your work experience section should typically come before your education section, and within it, list your most recent or most relevant role first. Employers want to know what you have been doing lately, not what you did a decade ago.
6. Be Honest About Your Experience Level
Exaggerating your experience or skills might get you an interview, but it rarely survives one. Our consultants — and the employers we work with — value honesty over inflated claims. If you are a fresher, own it, and focus instead on academic projects, internships, and demonstrable enthusiasm for the role.
7. Include Relevant Certifications and Training
If you have completed any relevant certifications, technical training, or diploma courses, list them clearly, including the institution and year of completion. This is especially important for technical and skilled trade roles where formal certification is often a hard requirement.
8. Proofread Carefully
Spelling and grammar mistakes create an immediate negative impression, even for roles that have nothing to do with writing. Read your resume aloud, or ask a friend or family member to review it before you submit it. Small errors are easy to miss when you have read the same document dozens of times.
9. Keep Contact Information Current
It sounds obvious, but outdated phone numbers or email addresses are a common reason candidates miss interview calls. Double-check that the mobile number and email on your resume — and on your Brilliant Job Consultancy profile — are both current and checked regularly.
10. Upload a Clean, Properly Named File
Save your resume as a PDF wherever possible, and name the file clearly — for example, "RaviKumar_Resume.pdf" rather than "Document1.pdf" or "resume_final_v3.docx." This small detail makes a noticeable difference in how professional your application appears to a hiring manager scanning through a folder of applications.
Putting It All Together
None of these tips require expensive tools or professional resume-writing services — just careful attention to how your resume presents your experience. If you would like personalized feedback, our consultants are happy to review your profile after you register with Brilliant Job Consultancy, and we can suggest specific improvements based on the types of roles you are targeting.
